From nowhere tells the story of the Eastern European country of Ruthenia, which existed for just one day. Formerly part of Czechoslovakia, Ruthenians formed their own nation on the morning of the 15th March 1939, but by that evening vanished into the growing Nazi Empire when Hungarian troops occupied the state. In 100 years this region has been considered part of multiple nations, and my goal was to define a graphic identity based on Ruthenia’s unique history and culture.
This project includes a foil-blocked and hand-bound book covering the history of the existence of Ruthenia; a motion graphics piece explaining this story which includes edited footage from 1939; artefacts of what never came to be including branded passports, flag and mock newspaper from the day; and a narrative postcard series inspired by an anonymous writer who travelled the area.
